How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a prominent role as your furnace prepares to work in your space.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board starts running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t functioning promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan going and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace turns off completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.
Your furnace will tell you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may see quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
