Why Your Furnace May Be Making These Noises
This is the time of year homeowners start turning on their furnaces to settle in for a cold winter. Unfortunately, when some heating systems start up, especially if it hasn’t undergone a fall heating tune-up, there are some problems that need to be assessed. A major problem you may discover is your furnace making funny noises – take a look at these furnace noises you should never neglect.
Scraping Sound
If you hear a loud raking sound that sounds like metal on metal, there is probably something faulty with the blower wheel. If you hear a noise like this, shut off your furnace immediately and call Stevenson Service Experts to inspect the system. There are a couple things that could be wrong with the blower wheel. First, it could just be loose and if the piece is not too impaired, can be tightened. Second, it might be that the blower wheel is broken and in need of replacement. Or third, it could be that the motor mount actually broke, causing the entire blower assembly to shake uncontrollably. One of our service experts would be happy to come out and take a look, and get you back to the noiseless and warm home you have come to adore.
Loud Bang When Furnace Starts
If there is a loud bang when your furnace comes on, there are a few things that could be going on. Two general issues are a dirty furnace burner or ignitor. Stretching and contracting air ducts can also create loud sounds after the furnace blower starts up. A soiled furnace burner or ignitor could delay the burners from igniting, forcing gas to build up. When the gas does finally ignite, it will create the loud pop you hear. This could end up being a safety issue, especially if one of those small explosions caused the heat exchanger to crack. Not only could that result in a carbon monoxide leak, but you’d end up having to replace the heat exchanger, which can be very costly.
The other issue, stretching and contracting air ducts, is a common noise complaint for people with metal ducts. If your system is making the loud pop and it is a result of your air ducts, it could be an indication of undersized ducts, obstructed vents, or a clogged air filter. Stevenson Service Experts is happy to come out to diagnose your problem and get your home back to order. Also, this will also result in improved comfort as well.
Whining Noise
If you hear a squealing disturbance, it could be the shaft bearings are in need of oil, there is an issue with the blower belt, or the blower motor is malfunctioning.
