The Ban on R22 Refrigerant

R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is harmful to the environment. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and ultimately all of the air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.

What do you need to know?

If you currently have a heating and cooling system that uses R-22 refrigerant, you don’t need to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the costs will increase, production will occur until 2020. After that time recycled refrigerants should be obtainable for a while.

In order to comply with this change, McElroy Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Grand Island carries R410A, a more environmentally friendly choice for refrigerants that lessens the damage to the ozone layer. Up to 50% of home energy costs may go toward heating and cooling the home.
